Aquarium Project Facts

  • The construction of this world-class marine habitat will create more than 600 jobs, producing an instantaneous economic impact of more than $50 million, $35 million of which will be labor income. Futhermore, during the two-year construction period, the project is projected to generate more than $25 million in taxes for all three levels of government.
  • The most anticipated and new family attraction in Toronto since the Hockey Hall of Fame, Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada is expected to draw nearly two-million visitors each year.
  • The 12,000 square-metre (130,000 sq.ft.) Aquarium will be one of the largest in North America, with a capacity of 5.7 million litre (1,500,000 gallon).
  • The Aquarium will conduct ongoing breeding/conservation programs for endangered species, including ongoing tagging and tracking programs for sand tiger sharks in conjunction with universities and government agencies.
  • The acrylic panels were specially made in Japan at the Nippura Company, as they are the most trusted and qualified supplier to produce panels of the highest quality
  • Wednesday, June 13, 2012 marks the first installation of the panels, commencing with the north section of the tunnel and using a total of six panels ranging in size from 4,672 mm x 5,698 mm to 7,244 mm x 5,698 mm and in weight from 2,201 kg to 3,338 kg

Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada Introduces Water for First Time Hydro-Testing of Shark Lagoon Begins

With less than a year to go before opening, Toronto’s newest family attraction – Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada – has reached another milestone in its construction.

Hydro-Testing of the acrylic tanks that will one day hold more than 13,000 inhabitants is set to begin Friday morning, Come witness the event as the 2.84 million litre (750,000 gallons) Shark Lagoon is filled with water for the first time. The testing is the first step in making sure the acrylic tanks, supporting piping and life support systems have no leaks. Once that is established, the rock work theming will begin.
